| Religion has always been a thorny subject in the village. The Anglicans thought themselves superior to all the others, while the non-conformists considered the Anglicans to be domineering. The stage was set for an all-time split. This became obvious when each built their own place of worship. The Anglicans had several places, but the final one was built at the top end of Bolton Hall Road in 1908. The Wesleyans built their place on Stanley Road in 1886. The Primitive Methodists constructed theirs at the end of Burley Street in 1877. The Gospel Hall, meanwhile, was built in Mexborough Road in 1906. So, there you are - you pays your penny you takes your choice. There are no religious buildings in
active use today. |
