July 1954

The old reading room was incorporated in the main adult lending library, new lighting and floor covering were installed, and most of the furniture and shelving was remodelled. The cost of the refurbishment was £1,350.

 

1958

The gramophone record lending library of long-playing classical recordings was established and maintained by subscribers.

 

1960's

plans for proposed extensionA scheme of alterations to the building reached the planning stage but it was felt that the considerable expense involved would not solve the main problem of increasing the total floor space and the plans were abandoned.

 

July 1961

Olicana MuseumThe Manor House Museum and Art Gallery moved from the library and was officially opened in its current premises in Castle Yard.

The photograph opposite shows the 'Olicana Museum' prior to the move, housed above the Library. The Ilkley Guide of 1958 describes the collection: 'In this small space are relics of Ilkley's history from the days of man in the Stone Age to modern times.'

 

 

Oct 1973

A new site to the west of Brook Street, created by the removal of the railway bridge and embankment, was approved in principle by Ilkley Urban Council for a municipal library and cinema development.

 

March 1974

Ilkley Urban Council met for the last time in the Council Chamber as the reorganisation of local government came into effect. The Parish Council continues to meet there.

 

Sept 1981

The new Tourist Information Centre opened in Ilkley adjacent to the library. Since August 1963 the library had been responsible for running the Tourist Information Centre for Ilkley.

 

Dec 1984

'Ilkley Library steps into the Computer Age' is the headline in The Ilkley Gazette with the introduction of a new automated system for checking books in and out.
