REVIEW
The second in a series of talks
to celebrate the centenary year of Keighley Public Library took
place in the lecture hall at the library on the afternoon of 16th
March 2004.
An enthusiastic audience of 17 were present to hear the inspiring
and informative story of ‘The History of Keighley Library’
from Senior Information Manager, Pauline Barfield.
From its early origins as the library of the Mechanics Institute
to the modern day service, the audience heard the full and interesting
history of Keighley Library including the tale of how Keighley
came to be the first town in England to benefit from the munificence
of Andrew Carnegie and also to be the first town to confer its
freedom on Mr. Carnegie.
The talk was very well received and prompted an informal discussion
including questions and positive comments about the library with
some interesting reflections and recollections about the past
service as well as some thoughts for the future.
Afterwards, Councillor Laurence Brocklesby proposed a vote of
thanks on behalf of all those present and the speaker was presented
with flowers from the staff of Keighley Local Studies Library.
