Wartime Keighley

Ian Dewhirst
was born in Keighley in 1936 and was educated at Keighley Boys'
Grammar School and the University of Manchester. After National
Service as a Sergeant-Instructor in the Royal Army Educational
Corps, he started work in 1960 at Keighley Public Library, where
he was Reference Librarian from 1967 until taking early retirement
in 1991. He writes and lectures extensively on local history,
and is the compiler of three collections by Hendon Publishing
Company, Old Keighley in Photographs, More
Old Keighley in Photographs and Keighley in the
1930s and '40s.
His other books include Gleanings From Victorian Yorkshire
(Ridings Publishing Company, 1972), Gleanings
From Edwardian Yorkshire (Ridings Publishing Company,
1975), A History of Keighley (Keighley Corporation,
1974), Yorkshire Through The Years (Batsford,
