This booklet
was published in 1954 on the fiftieth anniversary of the
opening of the library. The foreword is taken from the booklet.
Foreword
Books have an influence on life and conduct, the extent
of which it is impossible to estimate. The precepts they
inculcate, the lessons they exhibit, the ideals of life
and character they portray, root themselves in the thoughts
and imaginations, especially of young persons. By the study
of good books such as may be obtained from our Public Library,
it is perfectly possible for a person to acquire such a
general knowledge of the laws of nature and the facts of
history that every great advance in either shall be intelligible
and interesting. Through the generosity, wisdom and foresight
of many who in the past have helped to make the Keighley
Public Library what it is today, we are indeed much indebted
and very thankful.
