I
lived in Keighley for a year during the war as an evacuee
and it was the only time I was happy during those dreadful
years. Most of the time I was a runaway from the people
to whom I was evacuated because they treated me so badly,
but the Exley family of Keighley were a joy and a delight
to be with and made me feel that life was worth living.
Among other things they helped me join the library which
gave me hours of pleasure and introduced me to the theatre
(going every week to see Harry Hanson's Court Players).
I shall never
forget Keighley. It's one of my favourite places in all
Britain. And I wish your centenary many happy returns of
the day.
