orange plantation at Solano Grove. Meets Thomas Ward, a church
organist who recognises his musical talent and encourages

Fritz remains in the United States, going
to Granville as Professor of Music at Roanoke College |

Leaves Danville in Spring for New York. Returns
to Bradford where Julius agrees to support him at the Leipzig
Conservatorium after learning that he had earned some money
teaching music in America |

In Leipzig Fritz attends fewer classes and
more opera and concerts. Goes for Norwegian holiday and meets
Greig and Sinding. Composes some songs and Florida Suite |

Fritz leaves Leipzig. Greig persuades
Julius not to send him back to America. Fritz goes to live
in France, partly supported by his uncle Theodore |

Fritz still in France composing
songs and begins the 'Irmelin' opera. Becomes frequent visitor

Composes first violin sonata,
finishes 'Irmelin', a string quartet and 'Over the hills and

Meets Jelka Rosen, who was in
Paris studying painting. They become close friends. Starts
work on 'Koanga', an opera set in a Louisiana sugar plantation
in the days of slavery |
