1883

Fritz goes to Norway again and meets Ibsen

Uncle Theodore, who supported Fritz in Paris

1884

Sails to Florida to work on the orange plantation at Solano Grove. Meets Thomas Ward, a church organist who recognises his musical talent and encourages and tutors him for several months

1885

Fritz remains in the United States, going to Granville as Professor of Music at Roanoke College

1886

Leaves Danville in Spring for New York. Returns to Bradford where Julius agrees to support him at the Leipzig Conservatorium after learning that he had earned some money teaching music in America

1887

In Leipzig Fritz attends fewer classes and more opera and concerts. Goes for Norwegian holiday and meets Greig and Sinding. Composes some songs and Florida Suite

1888

Fritz leaves Leipzig. Greig persuades Julius not to send him back to America. Fritz goes to live in France, partly supported by his uncle Theodore

1890

Fritz still in France composing songs and begins the 'Irmelin' opera. Becomes frequent visitor to Mere Charlotte's

1892-95

Composes first violin sonata, finishes 'Irmelin', a string quartet and 'Over the hills and far away'

1896

Meets Jelka Rosen, who was in Paris studying painting. They become close friends. Starts work on 'Koanga', an opera set in a Louisiana sugar plantation in the days of slavery

1897

Prolific year for composition

1898

Death of uncle Theodore Delius in Paris

1899

Visits sister Clare in Bradford. Expresses a fascination for the Brontës. Visits London for a concert at St James' Hall
