AUDIO text>Establishing
the Community
We mostly went to one another's houses. When
I first came we had parties. Someone had a party every week, that's
how we did it. After we got established more people came over,
and we had either the christenings or the marriage. Somebody was
always christening a baby, and we always had a fine time, but
those were the only social places to go to at the time, until
the Textile was open. That was the first one.
I think it had a lot to do with the Church. The
vicar of St.Peter's, Peter Hawkins, he was working with the black
people at the time and he got it formed. When it started, it -
we couldn't get it off the ground, and we got together and we
had a meeting, and we thought, "Well, what can we do?"
And that's when we decided that we'd print some leaflets and let
the young ones go and advertise. And we formed socials and we
had them each week until it started building up, and we got on
our feet. We got money from the Bradford Metropolitan Council
to assist them and to help set up, you know, and that's the way
it started.
