Entrance to Kirkgate Market and the old Central
Library on Darley Street. Pictured in 1960 by M. Bruce, Bradford
Photographic Survey.
The Library opened on May 28th 1879, away from
its previous location on Tyrrel Street, which had opened in 1872.
It shared the premises with an art gallery on the top floor and
suffered from overcrowding.
The first foor comprised the Lending Library and the News Room;
the Reference Library and the Reading Room were located upstairs.
There was a separate lending and reading department for women.
