Kirkgate Market pictured in 1971 as part of the
Bradford Photographic Survey. The picture shows the Darley Street
entrance to the market.
The Market was designed by Lockwood and Mawson
and opened in 1871. Building was completed in 1878. The carvings
at the entrance were of Panona and Flora, goddesses and fruits
and flowers. The Darley Street entrance had 'spandrils' - scenes
of sowing and reaping, while the Godwin Street entrance displayed
summer and winter scenes. They were designed by a Westminster
firm, Farmer and Brindley, (who also made statues of monarchs
at Bradford City Hall). The market was closed down on November
5th 1973, despite a campaign of protest mounted by the Kirkgate
Market Action Committee.
