View of Prince's Way from the direction of Bradford
Central Library, 1974. Part of the Jack Booth collection.
The Odeon, on the left of the picture, was originally
known as the New Victoria when it opened in 1930 with a capacity
of 3,500. It screened two feature films and a newsreel daily.
There were three organ interludes on the Mighty Wurlitzer and
three stage interludes featuring an orchestra. The building also
contained a restaurant and a sprung floor ballroom. In September
1950 the building was renamed the Gaumont; it lasted until 1968.
The Odeon was born in August 1969 but closed in July 2000.
The opening films in 1930 were a Mickey Mouse
cartoon and the Gaumont Sound News, while the final film screened
here was 'Chicken Run'.
