Sir
Anthony Gadie, born 1868, died 1948. According to the Yorkshire
Observer (25.08.1948), "Sir Anthony rose from very humble circumstances
to be the most influential public man in Bradford." His business
career as a builder saw him develop 'Gadie's garden suburb' at Allerton
in 1910; he later founded a firm of auctioneers and estate agents.
He served on the City Council from 1900-1945 and became Lord Mayor
in 1920. As chairman of the Corporation Water Committee he played
a big part in establishing the Scar House reservoir, completed in
1936. He was Chairman of the Conservative and Unionist Association
in the city from 1924 to 1947, and also served a term as a Conservative
MP from 1924-29. As a military man he achieved some fame in World
War One.
He was knighted in 1935.
