Tomb of Sir Anthony Gadie thumbnail imageSir Anthony Gadie, born 1868, died 1948. According to the Yorkshire Observer (25.08.1948), "Sir Anthony rose from very humble circumstances to be the most influential public man in Bradford." His business career as a builder saw him develop 'Gadie's garden suburb' at Allerton in 1910; he later founded a firm of auctioneers and estate agents. He served on the City Council from 1900-1945 and became Lord Mayor in 1920. As chairman of the Corporation Water Committee he played a big part in establishing the Scar House reservoir, completed in 1936. He was Chairman of the Conservative and Unionist Association in the city from 1924 to 1947, and also served a term as a Conservative MP from 1924-29. As a military man he achieved some fame in World War One.
He was knighted in 1935.
