Alfred
Illingworth, born 1827, died 1907. He entered the family worsted
spinning business at 16. Along with his brother Henry he established
Whetley Mills, one of the largest factories in Bradford, in 1865.
His free trade views led him into politics as a Liberal MP - first
at Knaresborough (1688-1874) and then Bradford (1880-1895). His
marriage to Margaret Holden helped cement a strong alliance of two
of the dominant Bradford families of the period.
