Robert Milligan, born 1786, died 1862. He worked initially
as a 'travelling Scotchman', settling in Bradford as a retail draper
in 1810. He later became a stuff merchant and his company grew to
be a significant presence in the Bradford economy. A Liberal Non-Conformist,
Milligan was a co-founder of the Bradford Observer in 1834, supporting
such causes as the abolition of slavery in British colonies. He
became the first Mayor of Bradford in 1847 and served one term as
a Member of Parliament from 1852-1857.
