Charles
Rice, born 1820, died 1880, became the lessee of the Theatre Royal
in 1869.
He had been connected with a number of London theatres and had written
pantomimes for the Britannia and Grecian Theatres there. After his
death in 1880 Mrs Rice, his widow, carried on the theatre very successfully
until her death on 23rd August 1887. He made a decided impression
up and down the country and in London, in a wide variety of comic
roles. He played various serious parts with success. Rip Van Winkle
was played by him on three hundred nights. His best work, however,
was in writing and staging pantomimes.
