Sir
Henry Ripley, born 1814, died 1882. He joined the family firm at
Bowling, shortly becoming the manager of the Dyeworks in 1834. He
developed the business with the introduction of new techniques of
chemical dyes to the production process. He was noted for the creation
of Ripleyville, a model village for his workers. Ripley became a
Conservative Member for Parliament in 1874, only to be unseated
by the Liberal Alfred Illingworth in 1880.
